Epsikopi School was recently awarded the Gold Artsmark award for their achievements in Art across the school. 

This was celebrated by holding a special Gold Day on Wednesday 15^th July.  As part of the celebration the whole school took part in a concert singing ‘With a little help from my friends’ by The Beatles at the amphitheatre in St John’s School.  Everyone enjoyed the singing and joining in with the actions including Mums and Dads!

We have been learning about Britain since 1948 and have studied all the things that have changed over the decades.  Many things have changed for example fashion, where fabrics like Lycra have been invented to make clothing easier to wear.  Transport has become faster, more comfortable, and cheaper so that more people can afford their own vehicle.   We also learned about the mobile telephone known as a ‘brick’ and how computers have changed.

One of the other things we looked at was the vast changes in music throughout the different decades.  So Y5 have been practicing for their show.  They sang and performed the songs of some famous singers such as Elvis Presley Freddy Mercury, Madonna and more recently Busted.  Mrs. Cassily helped us improve our moves and imitations of certain singers. We also had to dress up in the style of the performer to help us become more like the character we were imitating.  Some of us even had to wear make up and that was just the boys!   Mrs Debock and Mrs Matheson also showed us their dance moves!

 Some children composed music using the Apple Mac’s to create music in the style of a particular decade.

Year 2 had a fantastic Big Arts Week this year and have produced some fantastic work. This year our work was based around Mexico with all the lovely colours and patterns that this country invokes. The children were very enthusiastic about their work and are so proud of what they have achieved and so are the teachers!!  They looked at and designed patterns, made masks, headdresses and dream catchers. We also thought about our school community and how we fit into the wider community of Cyprus, the highlight being an exhibition of Cypriot dance by children from Kolossi School.  We also enjoyed a trip to ‘Pizza Express’ last week. The children loved the day out and will now be able to help out with the cooking at home! They all followed the instructions from the chefs and made their own margarita pizzas which we all enjoyed as a snack back at school.

The focus of the week was ‘Community Cohesion’, so we started with activities about ourselves and our immediate community – our school and also the local community, including where we live in Cyprus.

 The children drew portraits of themselves using oil pastels and drew pictures of themselves with their friends and made a cardboard person in their school uniform to show they are part of Episkopi Primary School.  We then talked about all the things we like to do in Cyprus and drew pictures of these inside an outline of a map of Cyprus.  From looking at the maps, we saw that we ALL really enjoy going swimming and going to the beach! 

A few days later, the children began to find out about one of the continents of the world.  This was to help understand that we are part of the whole world.  Our continent was North America.  We found out about Native North American Indians and heard the story of Pocahontas.  The children then spent a few days working on lots of activities from North America.  We made paperchain people wearing traditional Native American dress.  The children LOVED making dream catchers!  They found out that dream catchers were used to trap the bad dreams and let the good dreams through.  We all made fabulous Indian head-dresses and we made beaded friendship bracelets following a workshop from Mrs Thomas.

 The children had a really lovely time during BIG Arts Week and they enjoyed being very creative!

F2 had lots of fun during BIG Arts Week this year. We started off by talking about what it means to belong to a community. We talked about ourselves and all the different communities we belonged to and why it is important to feel like you ‘belong’.

We realised that we all belonged to ‘one world’ and so we wanted to find out a bit more about people who live in a different community. F2 decided to research the ‘Inuit’ people in Antarctica.

One of the colourful activities we took part in was using oil pastilles, paints and different materials to make abstract circles.

We worked together to paint a giant ‘circle creation’. We talked about how many whole circles we could see and the different shades of colours we had mixed. We also thought about what we pictures we could see in the painting. Joe thought it looked like a ‘caterpillar.’ Daisy thought it looked like a ‘butterfly’ and Oscar thought it looked like an ‘alien’.

Some of the very talented Mummies came in to help us make mosaics. We made a dragonfly, a turtle, a sunflower and a fish. They looked fantastic when they were finished and we are going to use them to brighten up the garden area.

Our topic this term has been ‘Water’ so the children made papier mache, under-the-sea creatures. We made crabs, starfish and a family of ‘Dori’ fish from  the film – ‘Finding Nemo’.

We focused on the British artist Damien Hirst’s –‘Paint Filled Balloons’ and we used the ICT programme ‘2 Paint a Picture’ to re-create the effects he had used in his original painting.

We also had lots of fun learning to express ourselves through dance using ribbons and pom poms and singing action songs with Mrs Cassily in drama.

We all took part in a photography workshop and created a whole class portrait. We drew bodies of people, animals, fairies and superheroes and then stuck the photographs we had taken of our faces on the bodies. We ended up with a very funny collage!

Our arts week finished with a trip to the Honey Bees Ceramics Studio in Paphos. We all chose a piece to paint and then it was, fired in the kiln and glazed. We were really excited to take our finished ceramic piece home to show our families.

It was a very colourful and busy week in F2 and all the children and teachers had tremendous fun being creative!!

On the third of July we had our evacuation sleepover.

We arrived at school at 6pm, we were pretending to be evacuated children from cities that had been bombed.

We all had name tags with a different name and our usual names. We had a lovely dinner; we had a choice of fish and chips, sausages and chips, veggie burger or just chips. At the beginning Mrs Todd (Mrs Kestas) told us that if we heard the air-raid siren we had to go to the air-raid shelter as quickly and as quietly as we could be. We did lots of different activities including skipping, chalk, board and card games, dancing, making gas masks, code breaking and listening to stories. The air-raid siren went off twice that night. The second time ‘David’ (Bailey) went missing. When the air-raid warden (Mr Fessy) found ‘David’ everyone was shouting and cheering. Before we went to bed we had a cup of cocoa and biscuits and a midnight feast!!! We watched a movie called Valiant.

At 7am the parents came to pick up their child. 

Everyone enjoyed being an a evacuee and had a FANTASTIC TIME!!!

Year 3 have had a great time taking part in swimming lessons this year and their talents shone in their recent gala that took place on Thursday 9^th July. Mrs. Wallace our specialist PE teacher from St Johns School organised a number of events for the children to take part in including freestyle, backstroke , breaststroke and relays.

The results are as follows: Y3 Freestyle winner Kieran in a time of 16.55 seconds, Backstroke winner was Yasmine and the Breaststroke winner was Lewis. The relay got off to a false start; the children were so enthusiastic that they wouldn’t stop swimming after only one leg each!! The final winners for Year 3 were Niamh W, Niamh R, Yasmine and Adam. The winners of the fun relay were Kieran, Hannah, Bradley and Megan.

In year 6, a few days ago, we celebrated French Bastille day. Bastille is all about when the French revolution invaded the Bastille prison in 1789 and, although there were only seven prisoners in the prison at the time, they still fought for their rights. The French celebrate the historical day by eating a feast of traditional French foods such as camembert and roule cheese, croissants etc. They also set off an amazing firework display at the Eiffel tower. Although we couldn’t have a firework display we still hosted our own Bastille day and had a taste of all the foods!

Y6 have also had a risk day recently where we learned about all the risks that could happen around our house and street and how we should assess and deal with them. We saw a pretend accident that had happened outside our school. A bike had ran into the back of a truck and the person was badly hurt. So we all had a go at making an emergency call. When many of us were used to 999 we have all managed to remember the right number ( 2596 2222) and many of us have it saved on our phone’s. Then we had a chat about road safety and learnt about all the dangerous bugs with the pest control. After having our arms bandaged up by the medical team we learnt how to safely use our bikes and basic road awareness. At the house we learnt about potential risks that could happen everyday in our homes and how to prevent them. One of the highlights of the day was learning how to extinguish fires and how to escape from a smoke filled house.

Year 5 and 6 also produced and starred in a magnificent production called ‘Ocean Commotion’ – an underwater story with a serious message about conserving the environment. We had a fabulous time making our costumes and sang and acted our hearts out on the day.

Here at Episkopi Nursery we have been having an extremely busy but very exciting time. We have been doing lots of fun filled activities and we have really enjoyed ourselves. 

During this half term we have had visits to Happy Valley stables and Lemmings beach, we were able to have a little picnic on each of these trips and we always enjoy picnics! You can see some pictures of us meeting the horses and playing with our buckets and spades on the beach. We even had time to play with our huge rainbow coloured parachute where we love to lift this into the air and take turns to run underneath it.

 We have also had Big arts week and we have done so many interesting things during this time, we have made our own body pictures, taken part in dance with Nand Cassily during our drama sessions and we have also had a couple of children’s mums visit and show us their Countries traditional dress, from the photos you can see a little boy in Fijian dress and Mrs Boughan in traditional Indian dress.

 This half term has been so fun packed that we will be ready for our Summer holidays!

On Thursday 21st May KS1 held their annual sports day in Happy Valley.  The day was nearly postponed due to some very unseasonal RAIN!  However, it was decided that the day could go ahead and as you can see from the pictures everyone had a great time.  The Year 5 children were brilliant at helping out, demonstrating the races and helping whenever they could.  The event was well attended by KS1 parents and well done to all the parents who took part in the parent’s race!  The Dad’s race was VERY competitive however, the Mum’s race was much more popular with many more Mums taking part than Dads (some may have sloped back to work early!)  Although it did rain towards the end of the day, we all still had a great time.
